How I Became a Memory Speaker

Ron White the memory speaker shares how he became just that a MEMORY SPEAKER!!

I am typing this blog from my hotel room in Singapore. Yesterday I stayed in Indonesia and tomorrow will be Malaysia. This entire week I am traveling through Asia teaching memory training seminars a a memory speaker. By the way, I love staying in the USA as well :) If you have an organization looking for a memory speaker I would be thrilled to stay on my own continent :) But I am enjoying this trip. Here in Singapore I am staying at the Marina Bay Sands hotel. Google it…wow..is all I have to say. It is 3 buildings with a boat on top and the boat has a swimming pool! A swimming pool 57 stories up!! Check this out!

This year it will be 20 years that I have been a memory speaker. Frankly, I can hardly believe that. I started when I was 18 (I really did that isn’t a joke). The year was 1991 and I was a telemarketer for a company that cleaned chimneys. I called a guy and he said, ‘We don’t want our chimney cleaned we are trying to sell our house!’ I replied, ‘If you are trying to sell your house you need a clean chimney!’ He laughed and hired me on the spot to be a salesman for memory seminars. I was 6 weeks out of high school and I had a new job…the memory man.

Eventually I was mentored by a man named Harold Mangum, who is still a friend today and he still teaches memory seminars. Harold taught me the core of the presentation that I still use today and even stuck with me when I wasn’t very good…frankly I was aweful. I owe a bit of thanks to Harold for believing in me. I recently found this video of Harold on Youtube talking about how the brain works :

I first started out as a memory speaker speaking at businesses for free as long as I could mention my 2 day memory training seminar. That is a tough way to make a living. If I didn’t sell anything I didn’t make any money. Today many speakers ask me how I get booked to speak on stages with such big name speakers. The answer is simple. #1 my talk is good #2 I learned how to sell when I was 18 years old and 20 years later I have perfected it and seminar promoters like it when you can sell CDs in your speech :)

This ability has given me the good fortune to speak in Malaysia, Singapore, Bangkok, Australia, Canada, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Mauritius and Kenya just in the last 10 weeks!! And YES I would LOVE to come speak for your group as the memory speaker.

There you have it. That is how I became a memory speaker. I was a telemarketer at the age of 18 and just happened to call the right person at the right time and 20 years later I am sitting in a hotel room 44 floors up in a Singapore hotel room. Amazing how one small moment can change the course of your life forever.

If you are looking for a speaker, I sure do hope you consider me as your memory speaker. Here are some evualations from a recent memory speech I gave in Austin, Texas (See I do speak in the US)
